  • 60% of people with hearing loss are below retirement age

Learn More About Hearing Loss

Getting the basic facts on hearing loss signs, causes, and treatments can help you better understand this common problem. Each section below will provide more information on topics related to hearing loss, but for more in-depth answers and analysis, you should find a clinic near you and speak with one of our trained hearing care professionals.

Signs Of Hearing Loss

Though it’s one of the most common health concerns for adults, hearing loss can go untreated due to its gradual nature. Often, symptoms are not identified until they begin to hurt your quality of life, sometimes for years. Don’t ignore these common signs of hearing loss:

  • Normal sounds seem muffled or distant

  • A ringing, roaring or buzzing in the ears (due to tinnitus)

  • Needing to turn the volume of your radio, television or other audio higher than normal

  • Difficulty following conversations when background noise is present

Types Of Hearing Loss

You might think that hearing loss is simply an increased difficulty in hearing lower-volume noises, but it’s much more complicated than that. There are actually three main types of hearing loss that can affect the average adult:

  • Conductive Hearing Loss: Occurs when sound is not conducted well through the outer ear canal into the eardrum and bones of the middle ear. Results in a reduced ability to hear certain sound levels, especially faint ones. Can be corrected medically or surgically.

  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Occurs due to damage to the cochlea, or inner ear, and its nerve pathways to the brain. Unfortunately, it cannot easily be medically or surgically repaired, and is the most common form of permanent hearing loss.

  • Mixed Hearing Loss: A combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss where there is damage to the outer, middle and inner ear or auditory nerve. This hearing loss can be reduced, but not fully repaired.

Hearing Loss Questions

Often, people who believe they are experiencing hearing loss have many questions. They want to know symptoms to watch out for, if their hearing loss is permanent or can be treated, and whether or not they’ll be able to use – or even afford – a proper hearing aid. At Connect Hearing, we hear these questions every day, and our staff of experienced audiologists are trained to help you every step of the way. If you don’t see your specific question listed on our FAQ page, please do not hesitate to book an appointment to speak with us in person.

Hearing Loss & Tinnitus

Tinnitus is not a health problem in and of itself, but it can often be a symptom of a larger hearing loss issue. In fact, 90 percent of people whosuffer from tinnitus also experience some form of hearing loss. That clicking, buzzing or other persistent noise you hear can be caused by anything from clogged sinuses to inner ear damage, and it’s usually a good idea to get it checked out before it ends up becoming a much larger issue.
